Upcycle Jello Molds into Planters

May 20, 2014

I LOVE to take an item and turn it into something completely different.  My project today is an example of this.  I am sharing how I took old Jello molds that I found at a resale shop for .75 each and upcycled them into planters.

Here’s how you do it:

Spray paint your molds.  Or if you want you can drill your holes so you don’t have to touch up any scratches from drilling.  That’s what I’d recommend because if you’re like me you don’t want to sit and wait for the touch up to dry.
Drill holes into the bottom of the mold to allow the water to drain. Drill 6-8 holes.
I bought a chain from the hardware store to use to turn my Jello mold into a planter.  I then measured a triangle and drilled 3 holes into the sides to add the hooks so it would hang.
Here’s a picture of me testing it to see if it really worked.
I bought these striped petunias and yellow zinnias to plant in the blue mold.
Here is a close up of the mold hanging with the flowers planted.
And here is a picture of where I hung it in my garden bed.
Planter 2-  Spray paint your mold.
Drill 6-8 holes into the bottom of the mold.
Add your dirt and your choice of plants.  I chose to use succulents because I have lots of them in my gardens, so I didn’t have to buy any.  Plus they are very easy to grow with little upkeep.
I have it sitting on my front porch by my door.  It adds some color to my porch.
Here’s another fun upcycled project:

Hi there! Very cute craft. I featured it on my blog today, in my weekly Crafty Thursdays series. I love the copper color of the molds, I would probably leave them that way if did this craft- it would go well with the mediterranean look of our house.
