Dreaming 102

June 11, 2012

Did you learn anything about yourself last week?  Did you unearth any buried dreams?  I did!  It’s dreams I’ve had buried for years.  I’ve scraped the dirt and dust off of them, and picked them up and looked at them but that’s not enough.  I now have to put that dream down on paper .

Once we’ve brainstormed our dreams we can’t stop there.  A vaguely defined dream will only frustrate us! We need to be willing to express our dream. We need to state it simply and honestly in writing.  This starts the scary process for me.  I know if I write it down it has a much greater chance of happening.  If I write it down I can’t pretend I don’t have one and stuff it in a box and hide it on a shelf.

At this stage we just need to write it down.  We don’t need to  worry about how we are going to make it happen.  We just need one sentence of what we would really love to do. Remember, this isn’t your parent’s dream or your spouse’s dream.  It will take courage to write that dream down, particularly if it is different than your current lifestyle or what you think people expect of you.

The next step is to tell your dream to someone safe, someone who will nurture your dream.  I’m going to be honest, this one is really hard for me!  By telling someone your dream you are acknowledging that dream inside of you.  No pretending or hiding. You will feel raw and vulnerable.  But once you say those words out loud and sit with them awhile you will become more confident about your dream. Your dream will seem more “real.”

When you tell others about your dream, you may generate unexpected opportunities and support for it. For example, letting others know that you would like to travel more might generate more travel opportunities in your present job. Sometimes getting what you want is just a matter of asking for it.

Once you know your dream and have written it down and told that dream to someone safe, then you need to set aside time for your dream.  We need to schedule time for dreaming, to pray and plan and to set some goals.  A dream is like a garden-we need to nurture its growth. Our dream needs the proper soil and sunlight and water to help it grow.    We need to schedule time into our week to brainstorm ideas.  Where I live we have 20-30 min. drive everywhere we go.  I like to use my drive time to think and mull over ideas and to spend time praying about them.

What specific things can we do to make our dream come true? Write these down as goals. Break down a major goal that may take you years to complete into short-term goals. Then generate daily tasks to accomplish parts of these short-term goals.  It’s very important to write these down and keep the list in front of our faces daily.

As I close this post here is a great paragraph from Jim Rohn a great motivational speaker.

Dreams are a projection of the kind of life you want to lead. Dreams can drive you. Dreams can make you skip over obstacles. When you allow your dreams to pull you, they unleash a creative force that can overpower any obstacle in your path. To unleash this power, though, your dreams must be well defined. A fuzzy future has little pulling power. Well-defined dreams are not fuzzy. Wishes are fuzzy. To really achieve your dreams, to really have your future plans pull you forward, your dreams must be vivid.

Let’s get our dreams on paper this week and start brainstorming and setting some goals.  If you feel safe enough, I would love if you would share a sentence or two with me about your dreams or goals.
