5 Signs Your Communication Is Hurting Your Marriage (and How to Fix It)

November 29, 2024

Communication in marriage can feel tricky sometimes, can’t it? One moment you’re having a conversation, and the next, it feels like World War III. If you’ve ever wondered, “Why do we keep getting stuck here?” you’re not alone.

Let’s talk about five common communication habits that might be causing tension—and how to turn them around.

1. You interrupt your husband when he’s talking.

It’s so easy to jump in with your thoughts before he’s even finished. But real connection comes from listening first. Try active listening—repeating back what you heard can make him feel truly heard and valued.

2. You assume you know what he’s thinking or feeling.

How often do you think, “I know exactly what he means by that”? But assumptions lead to misunderstandings. Instead, ask clarifying questions like, “What do you mean by that?” You’ll be surprised how much it helps.

3. You use absolutes like “you always” or “you never.”

Saying things like, “You never listen to me” or “You always forget” only escalates arguments. Instead, get curious about his actions or words. Shifting from blame to understanding can lower the tension and bring you closer.

4. You exaggerate what was said or done.

Sometimes, when we’re upset, we exaggerate for impact. But overblowing things can make him feel attacked. Stick to honesty instead—it builds trust and fosters deeper connection.

5. You complain instead of making requests.

Complaints like, “Why don’t you ever help with the kids?” push him away, while clear requests like, “Can you help with bedtime tonight?” invite partnership. Be direct—it strengthens your bond.

If you recognize any of these habits, don’t worry—it’s never too late to improve. Start by asking yourself, Is this how I want my marriage to feel?

Better yet, dig deeper: Why do I struggle to communicate with my husband? Understanding the root of the issue is the first step to real change.
