Want a Better Marriage? It Starts with YOU

January 24, 2025

We’ve all been there—feeling frustrated, unseen, or misunderstood in marriage. It’s easy to point fingers, wish your husband would change, or dream of a magic solution that fixes everything. But here’s the hard truth: you can’t change your husband. The good news? You can change yourself, and when you do, it changes everything.

If your marriage feels stuck or tense, you might be asking: What can I do? The answer lies in a simple yet profound shift—focusing on your own growth.

Feeling Helpless in Your Marriage

When we hit roadblocks in marriage, it can feel like we’re at the mercy of someone else’s actions. You might think:

  • If only he listened more, we’d be happier.
  • Why doesn’t he notice all I do for him?
  • I wish he’d change so we could connect again.

These thoughts can lead to resentment, frustration, and a sense of helplessness. But there’s a better way forward—one that’s within your control.

The Solution: Start with YOU

Instead of trying to fix your husband or control his actions, focus on becoming the best version of you. Small, intentional changes in how you show up can create a powerful ripple effect in your marriage.

Here’s a simple exercise to get started:

  1. Take 5 minutes to reflect. Ask yourself, How can I show more kindness, patience, or grace today?
  2. Follow through. Whether it’s offering a compliment, extending patience during a tense moment, or choosing to let go of a small annoyance, your actions matter.
  3. Celebrate your effort. These small wins are stepping stones to a stronger marriage.

Practical Ways to Work on YOU Today

  • Practice Gratitude: Write down three things you appreciate about your husband. Shift your mindset to focus on the good.
  • Pray for Your Marriage: Lift up your husband and your relationship to God, asking for wisdom and guidance.
  • Prioritize Self-Care: When you’re well-rested and emotionally filled, you bring your best self to your marriage.
  • Communicate with Love: Replace criticism with encouragement. Words have the power to build up or tear down—choose wisely.

The Ripple Effect

When you focus on your own growth, your actions speak louder than words. A kind tone, a patient response, or a thoughtful gesture can soften hearts and foster connection. While change might not happen overnight, it’s amazing how your efforts to improve yourself can inspire positive change in your marriage.

Your Turn:
What’s one way you can work on YOU today? Start small, and trust that those small changes will create big shifts. A better marriage truly starts with YOU.
